![]() ![]() The build is very light and the software is free. Universal USB Installer is really handy if you want to backup, move, or experiment with Linux builds. The process is quite quick for modern USB drives, but there are a lot of "ifs and buts" about device compatibility. You have a few extra features like being able to format the drive first or set a Persistent file size where suitable. Installation is just a case of picking a Live Linux Distribution, the ISO file, and the USB drive. Fortunately, there are links right there on the interface to help you. ![]() You need a pretty good knowledge of Linux. ![]() Now, while it is easy, it isn't foolproof. ![]() The basic idea of Universal USB Installer is exactly what it sounds like - it's a universal streamlined installer for Linux to USB. Linux can even be installed to a USB flash drive - that's where the free Universal USB Installer comes in, making that process as easy as 1, 2, 3. It's this kind of versatility that makes Linux so attractive as an alternative operating system to Windows. So there is no solution for that and in future will be even less, as UEFI machines might stop you doing such things completely.Linux users often want to tinker with new builds, move them to other machines, and also have convenient backups. So you can not make any OS installation and formating taks from a restricted user windows machine. However this would again need the installation of drivers for the virtual machine, which again needs admin privileges. It would be also possible to use some virtual machine and let the usb drive to be connected only to the virtual machine and logically disconnected from the host. The only way I can think off is to boot the machine from some bootable media as linux itself, and do the operation from there. Windows has to protect such operations strictly. There is no workaroud or I can not imagine how it should work. Those are access to low level of the machine and as you can imagine, one can format all and destroy completely any machine if this would be allowed. Those tasks, regardless if the drive is portable usb or not, are simply prohibited by any current windows. The problem is that it has to create partition, write MBR and partition table etc. ![]()
